Travel Guide: Rome, Italy

Next up, in my 3-part Italy series Rome! We took a quick train from Florence

and arrived to Rome in just 1.5 hours. Our hotel was right near the Spanish Steps, so our  first order of business was exploring that area. Leading up to the steps is some amazing shopping mixed with quaint side streets which we loved exploring.

During our first evening in Rome we explored the adorable neighborhood of Trastevere. We did a walking food tour which was a fun way to see the area, while trying some of Rome’s notable delicacies. I highly recommend spending time in Trastevere. It’s a charming area filled with innovative trattorias, fun pubs and artisan shops.

We went on a guided tour of the Vatican, which included St. Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine chapel. We also did a group tour of the Colosseum, Roman Forum and the Pantheon. Note: we didn’t tour all of this in one day.

For us, the guided tours were extremely helpful. We are not a good candidates for self-guided tours via audio or reading. There is so much history in Rome. We prioritized what historical monuments we wanted to see and made sure we left time to eat and explore our way through the city.

Rome is known as the birth place of cacio e pepe. I ate it every chance I could, it’s so delicious!

We loved exploring Campo de’Fiori. When you’re walking around Rome you will find that you frequently stumble upon piazzas. Some other piazzas to visit: Navona, della Madonna dei Monti, Santa Maria in Trastevere, del Popolo and Testaccio.
